One hundred will be the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s (DVLA) special number this April when it celebrates a century of auctions of its valuable personalised registrations at Leicestershire’s prestigious Stapleford Park Country House Hotel. This spectacular event over three days will include 1200 highly distinctive vehicle marks.
Top of the list will be ‘51 NGH’ and ‘1 OO’ both of which have reserve prices of £10,000. Other notable marks include; RU55 ELL, MR51 NGH, DR51 NGH, 6 PAC, OK54 LLY and 500 GP.
DVLA began selling personalised registrations in December 1989 with an auction of just 74 marks held at Christies of South Kensington, at which the registration ‘1 A’ sold for over £200,000 creating a record for the price paid for a vehicle registration which stood until 1993 when K1 NGS eclipsed it selling for £231,000.
There are six DVLA Personalised Registrations auctions a year and winning bids often start from as low as £250 with the average purchase price across all previous 99 auctions standing at £3,500.
Stephen Ladyman, the Minister of State for the Department for Transport is an ardent supporter of DVLA’s Personalised Registrations business. Commenting on the 100th DVLA auction he said: "This is a notable milestone for everyone at DVLA and these highly professional auctions are now a must for motoring enthusiasts who want that ultimate of motoring accessories. The choice of registrations that is open to would-be bidders is huge and the income from the sale of these Government assets benefits all taxpayers of this country."
Damian Lawson, DVLA auction manager commented: "We have chosen Stapleford Park as our 100th auction venue to match the quality of marks we are offering for sale. As well as making available many highly distinctive marks we have also ensured there is something for everybody.
"There is no longer a stereotypical buyer of personal plates. Road hauliers are very enthusiastic about them as are emergency vehicle breakdown companies, motor sport teams and vehicle manufacturers. Small businesses and traders such as vets, doctors, plumbers, DJs and even fish and chip shop owners use them to promote their trade. Private customers however remain the main purchasers and the appeal of having a personalised registration continues to grow."
The DVLA Personalised Registrations 100th Auction will be held from 20th to 22nd April at Stapleford Park Country House Hotel, near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Full details, including the complete list of marks available, their reserve prices and how to bid.
