A HOSPICE that serves the Potters Bar area has taken its fundraising drive online.
Staff were inspired to turn to auction site eBay after being donated a signed first edition of the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
The book had been given to the hospice by one of the author's relatives, a hospice supporter from the Watford area, who has asked to remain anonymous.
Author JK Rowling signed the book for the winner, and watched the bids clock up on the website.
The book was sold to an overseas bidder who paid £4,500 just before Christmas.
And since then staff have been using the auction website to sell items donated to them and have managed to raise £8,000.
Steve Rose, director of shops for the hospice, said: "Through eBay we are able to sell literally everything - from a small ornament to a bath!
"eBay gives us the opportunity to sell anything to anyone anywhere in the world and make a significant extra contribution towards funding The Peace Hospice.
"It is really easy for people to look at. They can either go through our website by visiting our shops page on the website http://www.peacehospice.org.uk/ and there is a link which will take you directly to our pages. Or go via the eBay website."
Much of the profit from each sale goes directly to the hospice, less a very small charge from eBay which should shortly be reduced to virtually nothing for charities.
To make a donation to be sold on eBay contact Steve Rose on 01923 330340 or donations can be accepted at one of their six hospice charity shops, whose addresses can be found on their website.
- The Peace Hospice is currently looking for suitable premises to open a charity shop in Potters Bar.
If you know of somewhere that might be suitable please let hospice staff know.
