Restaurants are embracing the eBay revolution by offering customers the chance to bid online for meals from only 1p.
The novel idea has been cooked up by Sukhvir Dhillon, 30, a Glasgow entrepreneur, with the backing of Alan Tomkins, the former chairman of the Glasgow Restaurateurs' Association.
In what is believed to be the first website of its kind in the world, www.priceyourmeal.com has recruited an eclectic mix of more than 50 of Glasgow's top restaurants – including Rococo, Red Onion, Paperino's and
Kama Sutra – to allow customers to bid online to buy meals at the lowest possible price.
The website goes live today and if it is successful Mr Dhillon, who worked with his uncle Charan Gill in his Harlequin chain for five years as director of operations, intends to roll it out across the UK.
Mr Dhillon, who was born and bred in the city's west end and lives there with his wife and child, said: "I got the idea of bidding for meals from eBay where I've bought and sold lots of items over the years.
"Priceyourmeal.com is based on the same principle but simply applies it to matching diners with restaurants.
"I've spent the past year writing most of the software, testing it, then going round restaurants persuading them to let customers bid for meals."
Mr Tomkins said:"I subscribed for a small share in Sukhvir's business because I could see its potential not only here in Glasgow, but right across the world."
